about
What started off as a country remix of "Old You," a pop song by my band Maggie Dave, soon gathered enough of my own personal reflections on the theme of loss, like a rake full of fallen leaves. After I worked the tune out with John Schroeder (Pomplamoose) and Ross Garren (Bon Iver, Ben Folds), it became a full-fledged solo song. Their musicianship and lyrical sense of rhythmic remembrance flowered into something very special and totally unexpected.
I don’t think the lyrics are about a specific person. Maybe they are, unconsciously, and I’ll realize it years later. Maybe it’s about me? I do confess that I sink into heavy feelings when I sense a chapter is about to close and I’m about to lose someone for good. But the grief that comes with trying to hold on to somebody, or a memory of who you wanted that somebody to be, is unbearable. I’ve felt that before.
For me, this song echoes the sense of loss you feel after a relationship has withered and you can no longer trace when things began to sour. The lyrics suggest, perhaps, that this person was never who you thought they were. They were always the same. Maybe you were the one who changed.

lyrics
I miss the old you
And it feels like we’re letting go
I miss the old you
Feels like we’re letting go
I blame it on a lot of things
Last night I blamed it on the booze
I think I ought to be smarter
And blame it all on you
Cause tell you the truth
I miss the old you
I miss the old you
And it feels like we’re letting go
I miss the old you
Feels like we’re letting go
Can’t we just get together
Smile easy like it means forever
Why why why
Never ever be birds of a feather
Why you
Cause tell you the truth
I miss the old you
Maybe I’m the one who changed
But you stayed the same
Ain’t that a shame
I miss the old you
And it feels like we’re letting go
